That version of the 70-300mm isn’t built with ED glass.

And it, like the other G-series lenses, leaves the aperture at its widest setting when you take it off the camera. Even when it’s on the camera, it stays at the widest possible aperture; the lens only stops down when you shoot a picture with it set for a smaller f-stop on the camera.
