What is the main difference between 8 and 12 megapixels?—bookdevo……

I am currently thinking about investing in a digital camera. The 2 that I am looking at are the Canon Powershot SD 850 IS (with 8 Megapixels) and the Sony SureShot with 12 megapixels. The guy at the store said that the Canon performed much better, and that there is not a large visible difference between 8 & 12 Megapixels. How apparent is the pixel difference if you wish to crop and enlarge. How small can you crop with 8 and how small can you crop with 12? Is the additional megapixels worth getting if it performs slower and less stable? Thank you in advance!!

Well, obviously there are 50% more pixels, which gives you more cropping room.

But if you go over to www.dpreview.com and look at Phil’s camera tests, you’ll see that cramming more pixels onto a tiny sensor does not necessarily produce a better image.

The increased noise and noise reduction may in fact negate the increased resolution.

Check it out before you buy.
