the best type of memory card to get
387 Views Category: Digital Camera Ask and AnswersWhat is the best type of memory card to get?—aldakemi…
I have a Canon SD 950 IS digital camera. If I’m looking to spend $50 or less, what type of memory card should I get? The manual says I can get a SDHC card or a HCMMCplus card. (What’s the difference? I’m assuming the multimedia one would be better for video?)
Also, I’ll be using the video and picture functions. thank you so much!!

DHC cards are just High Capacity SD cards, which means they are available in the higher capacities of 4GB and 8GB. Whereas SD cards are only available in capacities of up to 2GB. SDHC cards are not necessarily faster in speed when compared to SD cards.
I wouldn’t worry about MMC cards, as no one seems to use these.
A 2GB SD card would be a good minimum capacity card, as your camera has 12MP (which means larger image file sizes). You would only need an SDHC card if you intend on shooting hundreds of images in one session, or maybe if you were going away for a few days or longer and needed the higher capacity.
You camera will accept a maximum of a 4GB SDHC card.Anyway, I suggest that you buy a 2GB SD card. High speed is recommended for optimal camera performance and especially for recording ‘videos’. (Sandisk Ultra II or the slightly faster, Extreme III SD are excellent). They’re very reliable and come with a lifetime warranty.
2GB will allow approx. 360 images at the best resolution and quality of (Superfine/Large)…or less images and some short movies. Don’t forget that high quality movies eat up card space rapidly (approx.1.9MB per second…or approx. 1GB per 8 minutes).
good luck…
