It’s impossible not to notice the F100fd’s large 28–140mm equivalent lens, which takes up half the 3.8-inch-wide chassis. At 6.4 ounces, the F100fd is not outrageously heavy, but in a high-end camera with a modest zoom factor we would hope for a slimmer, sexier shape.

The XSi / 450D body has a smoother and more-rounded shape with better-hidden seams compared to the XTi / 450D - it takes on a more refined look. Also visible in the top view image is the new ISO button location (formerly located on the back). This is a very nice change that makes Canon’s DSLR bodies more consistent in their functionality. The ISO setting is also visible in the viewfinder - which has itself been enlarged. These all are very nice improvements.

The W170 is equipped with advanced image management functionality. Filtering options allow you to search for photos by date and smile. Images can be viewed by date or in a helpful calendar view, and organized in the cameras’ “favorites” folder for quick retrieval of beloved images.

In fairness to the Stylus 1030 SW, this is a camera that’s as much about where it can go as what it’s capable of doing when it gets there. That said, it’s hard to sell consumers on a camera in this price range without decent image quality, and if the idea of “consistently inconsistent” makes sense, it’s a fair description of the 1030’s image quality proclivities.
