Panasonic DMC ZS3 vs Leica C-lux 3,Does anyone know the comparison between these two camera?—By T. Sohn
Is Leica still the best or has Panasonic DMC ZS3 topped the Leica C-lux 3?
ZS3 has HD video. Does C-lux 3 has HD video, also? Thanks!

- By JC — Leica C-lux 3’s Panasonic equivalent is DMC-FX37. DMC-ZS3 is a much more powerful camera with HD video recording, 12X zoom covering semi-super-wide (24mm) to super telephoto (300mm). Now, if you want manual controls like aperture priority, shutter priority, manual focus, etc, you would want Leica D-lux 4 (or 3) which is same as Panasonic DMC-LX3 (or 2).The Leica and Panasonic counterparts are the exact same cameras in different branding. The premium for the Leica version is not just the red dot, which in fact many Leica users cover up, it’s the longer warranty (as mentioned), the quality of the materials used to build the camera, and that the Leica version would hold its resale value.I personally recommend friends to buy the Panasonic version. Digital cameras evolve too fast to keep up with. I’m eyeing the ZS3 myself, as an inexpensive point and shoot companion to a fully manual camera I use mainly. It seems like a fine camera/HD camcorder. You might also want to consider Samsung HZ15W, it has comparable features to the ZS3 for much less. But I’m assuming you were looking at Leica/Panasonic because you know that Leica lenses are nice.
I suggest you go to dpreview.com and go to Buying Guides > Side by Side and compare the models you are considering feature by feature. Hope this helps a little!
- Marty says: “Leica” is only the best if you need the prestiege of the red dot.The Leica D-Lux4 and the Panasonic LX3 are exactly the same camera, made in the same Japanese factory, by the same Japanese workers using the same parts. This is like the that a Mercury Mariner is a better car than a Ford Escape just because it costs more. The Leica cost twice as much becuase it says “Leica” on it. But, to be fair, it does come with a longer warranty. The ZS3 is actually a pretty good choice, and if you can live without HD video and the high resolution LCD screen, the ZS1 has exactly the same image quality and costs $100 less.
