I would throw the Olympus FE 210 out of consideration right away, as it does poorly in reviews.

Take a look at the Fujifilm FinePix F20. That’s what I have. It’s a strong competitor in this price range, and is the pick of the litter in less than ideal lighting (such as indoors). It has a great flash for a compact, and is a bit slimmer and more pocketable than the Canon.

The Canon may take better outdoor-daylight shots, which Canon is more noted for, and does have a bit of extra zoom. I will say this: If you are seriously considering the Canon, then take a hard look at the slightly more expensive A570 IS. Why? Because the A540 is an older model, and uses the Digic II processor, while the A570 IS uses the superior Digic III processor. The A570 IS also has a slightly sharper LCD (more pixels). But the biggest difference is that A570 IS has optical image stabalization, which is a significant improvement to any camera, especially when it comes to using the zoom!
