Nikon D80 or Nikon D200
1,043 Views Category: Digital Camera Ask and AnswersWhich is a better deal…the Nikon D80, or the Nikon D200?—Man_hand
Im not earning a living as a photographer, yet, but im looking for a serious digital SLR, and have been told by several pro’s that Nikon makes the best. I own a Canon EOS Rebel K2 35mm, so im asking, not only which company makes better quality digital SLRs, but which of the 2 mentioned is a better deal overall. The D200 is of course more expensive, but higher cost doesnt always produce better results.

I own a D70s and a D200, so I might be in a position to make a comparison. Frankly, if the D80 was available first, I would not have upgraded from the D70s. It has more pixels and a few more features, but not so many that I’d say it was a quantum leap better. If I did not own a D70s _OR_ a D200 and the D80 came out, I quite probably would have bought the D80. The image quality is really the same as it should be - with the same sensor and mostly the same algorithms. The D200 is more rugged and has a few “pro” features that you would not miss for the first couple of years of your photographic journey.
I’d suggest buying a D80 now and holding off on a “real” pro camera until you know enough about what YOU need that you would be able to make this decision without asking on Yahoo! By then, even the D300 will be superceded by something else and that would be a wise purchase at the beginning of a professional career. The D80 would then become your backup body - which every pro needs - and it would serve you well in that capacity.
Get the D80 and spend the difference on an excellent lens. Such as…
