Nikon D40 with 18-200mm VR lens?

Bought this kit for $900 total. I can’t wait for it to arrive.
What are your inputs? Is it a good combination?
Tell me all that you feel like …when using D40 with 18-200.
I am moving from PnS to DSLR for first time.
Thank you!

This is actually a good move from a point and shoot. You are getting an 11X zoom - although we don’t speak in those terms in the SLR world - and a camera with a nice entry-level interface. These facts will make the transition to an SLR much easier for you. 6 MP is plenty, too, considering that it’s on a sensor that is probably about twenty times bigger than your point and shoot has.

Just to whet your appetite, here are some samples showing you the diverse range of shots possible with your new lens

That’s a great combo and an excellent choice. As a beginner to SLRs I would definitely recommend going with the Nikon D40.

In general you will always be better off with a great lens and an ok camera vs. an ok lens and a great camera. Lenses will also hold their value and usefulness better than camera bodies whose shutters wear out and which are constantly becoming dated as newer models come out.

For these reasons you usually want to try to save money on the camera body and put as much as you can afford into the lenses. Since they hold their value better, you can always sell them later on if you decide you aren’t getting enough use out of them. It seems like you’ve got the right balance.

The 18-200 VR is a great all-around lens and it was my first and only lens for my D80 for a while.

Eventually you may want to upgrade to some prime lenses (lenses with a fixed focal length) and/or “faster” lenses (those with a wider maximum aperture) to take advantage of some of the sharpest lenses and get pictures in conditions with less light. If you do, be sure to get lenses which have their own internal focusing motors (AF-S lenses) or else they won’t be able to autofocus on your D40. You can also avoid this issue by upgrading to a higher-end camera later on like the D80.
