What are the differences and what Is the most popular format for recording on a digital camera? I notice the 320X240 has a much longer record time, but how much does the quality suffer compared to the 640X480?

The different is half the size if you do the math.
It’s like the size of a credit card. It’s a good quality if you want to watch in on a phone or ipod. However, it’s terrible if you you watch it on your computer or tv because the pixels get bigger and you don’t see the details when you blow it up to those size. It’s like watching a movie 30 feet away compare to 10 feet.Just like taking a picture, if you take it under 320×240, the picture is fine if you get it as a wallet size. However, if you tell the photo shop to print it bigger like the size of your computer screen, it’s going to be very grainy like out of focus. That’s why professionals use 12 mega pixel cameras or bigger to captures photos in 4000×3000. With this, you can print a photo the size of your car and still looks very clear.
The current most popular format in a good camera is 640×480 with 30fps (frames per second) so that the movie is nice and smooth like a DVD. The latest models from Canon has 1024×720 with 15fps, not as smooth for fast moving movies like sports, but it’s very clear. If you want great movies, the Canon TX1 can produce 1024×720 in 30fps. It’s HD format.
