No one can tell you which camera is best for you! You need to go to a good camera store, not Best Buy or Wal-Mart, and actually hold the two cameras in your hands. Get advice from the salesperson, and see which camera feels right to you.
There are people who wouldn’t have anything but Nikon, and others who would have only Canon. You have to decide for yourself!

Keep in mind that a camera, film or digital is basically only a light-tight box, that if the shutter speeds and shutter are relatively accurate, should produce tghe same repeatable results. That covers 35mm. On digital, you have the sensor that acts as the film medium (I know that the digital storage medium, CF, SD, etc. is the supposed film medium, but it is actually the sensor). The sensor controls “film” sensitivity, color rendition, etc. That’s the simplistic answer.
All things being equal, it’s the “Glass” that makes the picture. In 35mm, Leica glass pretty much put everyone to shame for numerous years, until the advent of Canon & Nikon “ED” or “Flourite Crystal” glasses. Leica still won out due to the superior “German Coatings” on the glass, but that’s a whole nother arguement that I don’t want to start here.
As far as lens mounts & features go (Even though I shoot Nikon & Leica), Canon “owns” the market for ultrasonic motors & electronics. The D40X can only use “S” lenses with silent wave motors, or “D & G” lenses and focus manually. This really limits functionality. The canon, on the other hand, I believe, can use all of the digital lenses, plus the older “EF” series autofocus 35mm lenses. The choice is yours. I hope this helped.
