case best for a Nikon d80 camera
323 Views Category: Digital Camera Ask and AnswersWhat case would be best for a Nikon d80 camera?
I am about to purchase a d80 with the 18-200 lens. Most of my photography is of my 2 active preschoolers and I am looking for a case that I will be able to get the camera out of quickly so I don’t miss those my photo opportunities. I will only carry the one lens with me and maybe a battery or flash (speedflash 600)– and I don’t really want to look like I am walking around with a big camera bag– I’m going for mom with a regular bag look.
Been looking at the crumpler bags– but not sure which is the right size. And was recommended to try the case logic slrc-2.
Any suggestions or advice would be great. And any additional info about the camera or what accessories are good would be appreciated. Thanks.

I use a backpack … it is roomy and easy to carry. When I am in the shooting mode, I keep the camera around my neck. Keeping it in a case and then trying to remove it to take a quick shot and then placing it back into the case is not very practical at all.
Plus someday you will want to add a 12-24mm lens to shoot landscapes.and you can put it in your backpack along with your SB600, extra memory cards and spare batteries for your flash.

I recently wore a Crumpler camera bag every day during a 10 month round-the-world trip. Loved it. Their bags offer just as much protection, ruggedness and configurability as all the other brands, but without looking like expensive camera bags.
Looking at the current selection and your requirements, one of the ‘million dollar homes’ would probably be your best bet.
(You can click on the Tech Specs to look up the dimensions of each bag.) Or just take your gear into the nearest Crumpler store/ camera shop and try them out. Crumpler is an Australian company, so you’ll probably find a place nearby (I peeked at your profile info).
Alternatively, do as my wife did on our trip and just throw the D80 in your regular bag - it’s not a Fabergé Egg. (I used a Ben’s Pizza XXL bag to lug around a D200 with an extra lens, a bottle of water and a constantly changing Lonely Planet.)
As for extra gear, what you’re getting now should cover just about everything. That plus a memory card, of course. You could even wait with the external flash for a bit - maybe the D80’s pop-up flash is all you’ll need. Depending on what you shoot, you might want to add an extra lens at some point. Like a 50mm f/1.8 for low-light photography; a dedicated macro lens for close ups of flowers; a 12-24mm for landscapes… I don’t know. You’ll figure it out if and when you run into limitations with the 18-200mm. I personally like to keep a lens cleaning kit, a charged spare battery, and a spare memory card in the camera bag, but that’s just me.
With young children, the only immediate requirement is a UV-filter to shield the front element of your 18-200mm zoom against finger prints and apple juice![]()
