Canon PowerShot SD980IS Rating and Reviews

Canon’s iconic ELPH has always been a show-off, with the looks and smarts that make you want to carry it out in the open for everyone to see. The PowerShot SD980 IS takes the concept even further with Canon’s first-ever touch panel interface. The camera that invented sleek and slim is equipped with a huge 3-inch PureColor System LCD screen that responds to your touch, delivering operation that’s as natural and intuitive as cutting-edge technology should be. Four opulent color options are the icing on the cake.

Index of Canon PowerShot SD980IS Expert Reviews

  • PCMag—“Overall, the Canon PowerShot SD980 IS offers an impressive feature set, including an intuitive and responsive touch screen, a wide-angle lens, speedy operation, and HD video capture. But unacceptable levels of wide-angle barrel distortion prevent this camera from earning a top rating.”
  • CNET Australia—“The touch interface is one of the nicest and easiest to use that we’ve encountered on a compact camera. So this is a bit of a “do it all” camera, that delivers nice images, has some great specs under the hood, but is a little slow to get off the mark. We’d recommend it for the indecisive buyer who isn’t quite sure if they want a touchscreen or not, provided you’re happy to part with that much cash.”
  • Cameras.uk—“The Canon IXUS 200 IS does a decent enough job for a pocket camera. It has a good balance of features, appears to be well made and has a touch of style to it. Key features include an extreme wide angle lens and High Definition movies.”
  • imaging-resource—”With an ultra-compact size, limited controls to worry about, and overall good exposure and color, the Canon SD980 IS offers great quality in its tiny package. A Smart Auto mode proves useful under a variety of conditions, combining Face, Blink, and Motion Detection technologies with 22 preset situations to get the best exposure. For more experienced users, the Canon SD980 IS does offer a standard Program AE mode, with a handful of adjustable exposure variables. Noise handling and lens distortion aren’t optimal, but also aren’t worse than average. Overall, the Canon PowerShot SD980 performs well. There’s a little dilemma about which mode to use between widescreen and 4:3, but the extremely wide-angle lens is great for landscape and whole-room shots.”
  • DigitalCameraReview—”What the PowerShot SD980 IS does best is show off. Flipping through images with a swipe of the LCD or a flick of the wrist is sure to please a small crowd of friends and family. However, no camera is going to inspire any real “wow” factor if the images don’t look as good as the interface. The SD980 delivers dependable image quality whether or not you choose to utilize the touch screen.”
  • pocket-lint—”Apart from some fiddly controls the IXUS 200 IS is very nice to use and the active screen technology is great, particularly when selecting the focus point on the screen or the vertical shutter trigger. Image quality and movie picture quality is excellent and so, overall, the Canon IXUS 200 IS should be high on your list possible cameras to buy if you’re in the market for a compact such as this.”
  • ephotozine—”Apart from the noise issue, the camera is pretty fast, takes sharp pictures and is responsive. For that reason, the Canon IXUS 200 IS is a perfectly decent camera to own. If you’re part of the innovation crowd that need the newest stuff first or something that has a novelty feature, then you should get this camera.”

I just bought this camera and it’s beautiful, the desing and the features but you have to play with it to get confortable using it. The only thing I really hate about this camera and I wish one of you had wrote it here (since I always read reviews before buying anything)is that it has a nice 3 inch screen which is one of the main reasons why I bought it but guess what? you can’t enjoy it because when you are taking pictures it has 2 stupid vertical lines that take a full inch away from the screen(yeah I know they have the picture options). But why would Canon do this to it’s customers? advertising such a nice large screen when you can only enjoy the full screen when taking video? Last time i checked this is a digital camera to take pictures not a camcorder,(thanks for video feature though)so I think all the great features should go on the taking the picture experience including using the entire screen for that. That’s just my take on it. I was very dissapointed with this. But the camera is beutiful and it takes great pictures.Of course if one of you know how to fix this so i can enjoy the whole screen when taking pictures please let me know. Thank you!

I am by no means a photographer, but can tell a good picture from a bad one…This camera take excellent pictures! The only bad thing about the camera is that the touch screen is not as advanced as I wish it would be.
