Im starting an underwater photography course, and i’d like to buy a good camera but i also need something useful out of water, just for family pictures.

If you get an underwater housing for it. It is a great camera that I recommend very often, but just don’t be misled to think that it is an underwater camera.
The Olympus Stylus 770 SW is okay down to 33 feet. I can’t vouch for the image quality, but I know it’s made for going underwater without any additional equipment.
If you’re just starting this course, you might want to upgrade to better equipment next year, like an SLR in an underwater housing. I’m not sure what bearing that has on your choice, but it may be something to think about. I would personally think about the Olympus with the thought that I could either pass it on to someone or sell it on eBay once I buy a good SLR camera. Or, just keep it for a tiny pocket-sized spare camera. The A640 is too big to fit in your pocket. The light output on the A640 is a bit better, which might matter underwater, unless you will be using auxilliary lighting.
