Here are the pro’s of the A640

* Bright, attractive color that stops short of seeming overdone
* Good skin tones
* Auto white balance handles a wide range of lighting well
* Better than average exposure accuracy
* Good lens, generally low distortion and chromatic aberration
* Excellent shutter response at wide angle settings, good at telephoto
* User interface makes sense
* Accurate LCD viewfinder
* Articulated LCD
* Good low light capability (In Shutter Priority or Manual exposure modes)
* Case design fits both large and small hands well
* Excellent battery life

Here are some cons of the SD1000

* No manual aperture and shutter-speed controls
* Navigator ring/4-way controller difficult to operate
* Auto white balance renders warm images under incandescent lighting
* Fine-tuning adjustments and some scene modes buried deep within the Function menu
* ISO menu disappears quickly
* ISO 1600 images are barely usable except for small prints
* MSRP a little pricey for a point-and-shoot camera
