I bought a Canon 400D/XTi recently. I am looking to replace the kit lens it came with, how do i know what kind i should get (do they all fit all camera?) i am looking for an ‘all-round’ kind of lens since im just getting started, but id also like somthing with a bit of zoom for AU$500 (give or take)
also while looking on questions similar to this one i noticed someone saying something about 1.6x multiplier on this camera what does that mean? Do i need to take this into account when buying lens? remember.. simple talk.. i am new to this

Yes, your camera has a 1.6 multiplier. What that means is that the focal length of the lens is effectively 1.6 times longer with your camera than with an “ordinary” camera.
The reason for this, if you care to know, is that the image sensor inside the camera is smaller than an old-fashioned standard-sized 35mm frame of film. Your camera sees through the middle of the lens only, cropping out the edges of the view. The net effect is that the magnification of the lens is greater.
Don’t panic! Most digital SLR cameras do this. It’s normal.
But yes, you absolutely must take this into account when choosing a lens. (Smart of you to consider this!) If you purchased a 50mm lens, the 1.6 multiplier would make it roughly equivalent to an 80mm lens.
That’s a big plus, when you want zoom!
It can also be kind of a drag, when you want wide angle. That’s the trade-off. I find that I need a lot more zoom than I do wide angle, however.
I’d recommend to you a great Canon lens that’s kind of in the middle of their line: the Canon 28-135mm IS lens. This lens has a good zoom range, and has an image stabilizer built in for sharper photos, especially in low light. On your camera, the zoom range would be approximately 45mm to 216mm. That’s a pretty broad range, and it’ll cover a large portion of the photos you want to take. It’s also fairly compact (vs. comparable lenses of this zoom range.)
I have several Canon lenses, and this is the one that I leave on the camera most of the time.
