Canon 400D or Nikon 40D?
I’d like to buy a DSLR within 400GBP. Unable to decide between these 2 models. I’ve seen the Nikon 40D and its night mode pictures are wonderful with good ambient light. Is Canon 400D as good as that ?(I know canon is more expensive for its more megapix).—Sudip K

They are both great cameras.

My pick would be the 400D over the D40, but I am a canon shooter. Its performance is on par with the D40x Nikon and it offers relatively inexpensive glass (lenses) when compared the Nikkor lenses. Plus, I love the EX series of speedlite flashes. But, I just told you that I picked a camera based on the accesories and lenses, not the body.

When searching for a DSLR, it is important to look at the whole system and not just a single camera. In the case of the Nikons, they too have great glass and stunning accessories. My only drawback to the D40 is that it only has three focal points when looking through the view finder versus the 400D having nine. For an amateur, that is important, but for advanced enthusiasts and professionals, that is a bit less important.

Both are great cameras. I cannot give one any worse makes than the other. It is simple a choice of whether you like the look and feel of one body over the other in your hand and if it feels good when holding it up to your eye.

In all, you cannot go wrong with either. Which ever direction you choose, happy shooting.

The Canon 400D is excellent in low light, and with good ambient light. It has a low light noise reduction setting, which is quite good, also it has the self cleaning sensor, which the Nikon lacks.
