It will depend. Generally, NiMH batteries come in two broad classes: regular NiMH batteries and low discharge NiMH batteries.Low-discharge NiMH batteries retain a large portion of their charge over time, even when left unused, unlike regular NiMH batteries which self discharge quickly even if not used. Low-discharge batteries are so good at holding onto their charge that they can be used right out of the package because they hold a charge from the factory. For these types of batteries, the best is currently the Sanyo Eneloops, about 2100 milliamp-hours (2100 mAh).

Another advantage of the Eneloops: they have low internal resistance. This makes it easier to get the current out of the battery. Many newer cameras have such a huge current drain that regular NiMH batteries can’t overcome the internal resistance for very long, even if the batteries have a charge in them.

For regular NiMH batteries, the specification to examine is the mAh rating. Generally, you want a rating of 2500 mAh or better. I like the Eveready Energizer 2500 batteries because they are everywhere, inexpensive, and well-made. I believe they may actually be made by Sanyo/GE (which is also a good brand of regular NiMH).

Besides batteries, you need to consider your charger. You can buy good batteries, but a poor charger will either destroy them by overheating the batteries (heat kills batteries) or not fully charge the battery (like only filling up your car gas tank halfway).

I’ll recommend the Maha 401FS as the best charger because it charges batteries individually, is relatively inexpensive, and gets you a full charge
